Clementi and the woman at the piano

This talk will illuminate the ways in which Clementi's music provided opportunities for women to engage in radical new kinds of performance. His exploration of gendered artistic expression touches on themes of technological change and the tensions between Enlightenment and Romantic thought. Clement's music required intense practice, and a virtuosity which contrasted with the simplicity and grace of conventional music for the drawing room. The talk will be illustrated with musical demonstrations. It promises to be a real treat!

All welcome!
